Sweet 16
For my daughter's 16th birthday, she had a joint party with her two best friends. They were each allowed to write their own guest list, and we had about a hundred people in attendance, including adults (85-90 kids). We rented a large barn (which the owner rents out for parties) and hired a DJ. We had a photo cake with a picture of each girl as a small child on it and 16 candles, which they all blew out together. Just before the cake-cutting, the DJ played 'Sixteen Candles' for a Father-Daughter dance, then 'Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen' for the cake-cutting. Since one of the birthday girls was in our high school marching band, her mother had arrenged for the band's drum line to surprise the girls by marching in with their instruments and giving a mini-concert. The party was held in November, so, in lieu of gifts, the invitations asked that each guest bring a toy to be donated to Toys For Tots. We collected a lot of toys and many of the guests were kind enough to bring gifts for the girls as well. The girls did a great job of decorating with a pink, lavender, and silver color scheme and with white Christmas lights strung along the ceiling beams and wrapped around the support posts of the barn. The kids all danced the night away and had a blast, and the three birthday girls will always have a Sweet Sixteen to remember.
