Crazy Cake-Off Party 13yr

November 2008

Hannah in Newport Beach, CA, USA

For my thirteenth birthday I wanted to do something big; something no one else had done. After a lot of thought I decieded to have a crazy cake contest with a twist- the cake had to be at least 13 inches high! INVITATIONS- For invitations I decieded to be simple I drew a picture of a really awesome cake and printed all the information on it; what, where, when, why, what to bring. I invited five of my closest friends. And put them into three teams of two. DECORATIONS- For decorations I just hung streamers and balloons. Preparation- Each cake had to be 13 inches high and had to have 13" incorperated into the cake somehow.  Since they had to be 13 inches high we had to buy A LOT of cake mix frosting pans and things to decorate with. We went to the swap-meet and bought 9 cake pans; then later we ended up buying 12 in all (4 for each team). Next was the cake mixes; we bought 12 boxes of cake mix from Stater Brothers and a bunch of frosting. Now we were planning on decorating with a type of frosting called fondant- I would not advise it unless you are experienced with it; we ended up only buying one package of that and it still was hard to use.  We bought a lot of mult-colored fostings to decorate too. We orginized all the frosting and cake mix into towers- that looked really cool. ACTIVITIES/GAMES- When the guests arrived we separated into teams and sketched out what our cake was going to look like. Then the contest began we had 15 minutes to make the cake mix and then 45 minutes for them to be baked-it seems like a lot of time but it wasn't. We used three ovens to cook all 11 of the cakes (one of my friends forgot that they had four cake mixes instead of three). PARTY SNACKS- When all the cakes were done we went to dinner at California Pizza Kitchen by ourselves (no adults!) while we let our cakes cool. CAKE AND FAVORS- When we got home we had an hour to decorate....it was crazy! My friend and I's cake didn't come out of the pan all the way so our cake was very deformed; it was so much fun-frosting the cake and trying to hold up the cake as it was about to fall.   Finally when we were finished our cakes were judged and then we all had a slice of each- suprisingly they were really good! Two the teams mashed theirs together and it made this weird colored much that felt really cool- we had a great time. Afterward we went to my dad's house to watch a movie and eat a bunch of sugar and then went to sleep. It was so much fun my friends say it was the best party they've ever been to! We gave some of the leftover cake as party favors. And they still talk about it... I don't blame them it was hysterical!!!!"
