Movie Theatre Party 14yr

September 2008

For my daughter's 14th Birthday, we held an Outdoor Movie Theatre Party. My husband had purchased a video projector at a local auction and we built an 8'x 6' movie screen.  First we built a frame for the screen and staked it into the ground. We used Tyvek" for the screen because it had a reflective quality that worked much better than a whit bedsheet. My daughter helped design invitations that looked like tickets to a movie theatre at our house.  The name of the movie was included on the invitation in case parents had any objections to what we were showing. For the concession stand I took an old clean fish tank for a faux Popcorn Machine. First I stood it on end and used yellow window chalk to make "Popcorn" look like it was piled up from the bottom and dropping down from the top on all three sides. With a red chalk marker I wrote the word "Popcorn" across the top on all three sides. To keep the real popcorn inside I cut a peice of cardboard to 1/3 the size of the open side of the fish tank and covered it with aluminum foil then taped it in place.  When it was time for the party I popped several bags of popcorn and poured them into our "Popcorn Machine." The popcorn was served via a large scoop into popcorn bags for each party guest.  I purchased several boxes/packages of movie theatre favorite candies like Twizzlers Dots M&M's etc. at the local dollar store and set them out near the popcorn machine. When my daughter's friends arrived they all asked how much the candy cost and were excited to learn that it was free. In addition to candy our concession stand offered hamburgers hot dogs hot chocolate and soda to our guests.  While we waited for it to get dark enough for the movie we played karoke music for the teens.  When it was finally dark enough to show the movie the kids grabbed their snacks and sat in the lawnchairs we set out in typical theatre style.  My daughter had chosen to watch "The Breakfast Club" which most of her friends had never heard of. At the end of the movie we served cake and ice cream while my daughter opened her gifts.    The kids were having such a good time that we played a second movie for them afterwards.  The party was so easy because I didn't have to do much once the party started but sit and enjoy a few classic movies from my youth.  Now my kids want to know if we can have movie night every weekend."
