This is my idea for a luau for my 14th birthday party! The setting: I decided to set up in the back yard, since there is fair weather in June. We hung up brightly colored streamers from the house and the garage roofs, and along the fences. We lit mosquito torches in the four corners of the yard when it got dark. We set the table off to the side of the yard with the umbrella opened. On the table was a brightly colored table cloth and colored utensils, plates, and cups. I found everyone’s Hawaiian names on the internet and made place setting and name tag cards. I draped grass skirts and leis on the chairs for the guests. I hung colored light bulbs on the umbrella. On the opposite side of the yard, we had my CD player with all my favorite CD’s. We had another table set up on another side of the yard with the food. We put a pineapple on each side of it, and had a bowl of Hawaiian fruit punch in the center. We made hot dogs and hamburgers, and had (of course) pineapples, papayas, and passion fruits in a bowl.  The plan: The guests would arrive at around 4:30pm. I asked all of them to wear swimming suits, so they could wear the leis and grass skirts over them. A Hawaiian wahine (woman) will traditionally wear a flower on the right side if she is single, and on the left if she's spoken for. (It is said this is because the left ear is closer to the heart.) We played 'ulumaika, a Hawaiian game resembling lawn bowling for a while. After that, we played Hot Coconut. The birthday person starts with the coconut and when the music plays, they pass it around the circle. When the music stops, the person holding the coconut is out. Last person wins! We then sat down on our beach towels to play musical towels. We again turned on the music, and swayed from towel to towel. When the music stopped, we all sat down, but oops!, there weren’t enough towels for everyone! The person with out a towel is out, and the last person wins again. We awarded little Hawaiian dolls to the winners. Then, we sat down for the hamburger / hotdog dinner at around 6 or 6:30pm. After dinner, we sat down to play more games. I had two piles of tacky tourist gear at one end of the yard. The girls lined up in two teams at the other end of the yard. When I said go, one member of each team had to run to their pile, put on one item, and run back. They each had to run and put on another item until all there clothing was gone. My mom took pictures which we later mailed to them with the thank you cards. Then, we got out presents and I opened them. After presents, we had pinapple, strawberry, and orange sorbet. Mine had a little candle in it. It was almost 9 by then, so we put on some music and tried to hula. We had instructions, but there as a lot of laughing. After that, we just hung outside and talked with the music on. Everyone left at about 10, and it was a whole lot of fun!
